Call for Curator:
Dance & Poetry Event for the Berkeley Poetry Festival 2024

The Berkeley Poetry Festival is seeking an innovative and dynamic Curator for a special segment that integrates dance, poetry, and audience participation. We invite applications from individuals who embody our commitment to equity and inclusion and have a passion for blending artistic disciplines.

The performance will be on Saturday June 8 at the Berkeley Ballet Theater. It is a large studio space with a piano.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and execute a 1-1 ½-hour session that harmoniously combines dance, poetry, and audience interaction.

  • Select poets and dancers of the Bay Area, emphasizing inclusion of BIPOC and LGBTQ2SIA+ voices.

  • Collaborate with poets and dancers to create performances that are both expressive and engaging, encouraging new interpretations and experiences of poetry through movement.

  • Ensure accessibility to support maximum community participation.

  • Promotion of event through social media platforms.

  • Attend organizer meeting and communicate progress with dancers & poets, and festival directors.

Qualifications:

  • Strong background in either dance, choreography, poetry, or performance art, with a deep respect for diverse artistic expressions.

  • Demonstrated experience in organizing and directing dynamic performances or events.

  • Keen understanding of poetry’s influence on movement and vice versa, with an ability to convey this in performance.

  • Proven ability to engage and involve audiences in participatory art experiences.

Vision for One-Hour Session: Our envisioned 1-1 ½ session will feature a series of dances, each inspired and including by a specific poem, or a longer piece also incorporating poems. Throughout the performance, the audience will be invited to participate in an interactive segment, perhaps writing a line of poetry in response to the dance or engaging in a improvisation inspired by the poem. We are open to other formats as well. The vision is to create a dialogue between the artists and the audience, celebrating the conversation between poetry and dance. You may use both pre-existing and/or new work.
